Spotlight on You

Jennifer Motles, Chief Sustainability Officer at Philip Morris International, recently shared PMI’s Low Carbon Transition Plan, a detailed disclosure of the company’s strategies. The plan provides technical details on how the company is working internally and with others to significantly cut greenhouse gasses, especially carbon emissions, and achieve set climate goals. “As we begin #COP26, let's reflect on what we can do,” Motles urged fellow corporate citizens. “Many have pledged and committed to aligning with lofty goals that promise change… but we know that the sum of these pledges will not be enough to safeguard ecosystems and protect our planet… Coupled with transparency, pledging can indeed enable implementation, accountability, and positive impact.”

Helen Seibel, Global Director, Community Investment & Philanthropy at AstraZeneca, recently participated in the company’s ACT on Health Equity: Community Solutions Challenge, as a member of the employee review committee. “Today AstraZeneca announced 30 winning nonprofit organizations working to advance health equity on a community level,” Seibel shared via LinkedIn. “I’m proud to play a role in directly impacting patients and communities. To me, achieving health equity would mean that everyone will have access to the care that is right for them and that they can see themselves in the systems and practitioners that serve them. As a member of the review committee, I had the great privilege to see the many innovative ways that organisations are working to address the inequities that exist and create a more just and inclusive society.”

Suzanne Trusdale. Vice President, Small Business Solutions at TELUS Business Solutions, shared her visit to one of the company’s small business hero prize winners, Ryan O’Neil Knight, who has been helping keep his community clean for more than a decade. Ryan offers an eco-conscious, waterless mobile car cleaning service, as well as a youth entrepreneurship training program. His team provides future entrepreneurs with supplies and coaches them to launch a mini business that’s mindful of giving back to the community and the environment.

The UPS Foundation celebrates 70 years of giving this week, and is marking the occasion with a bold goal to positively impact one billion lives by 2040. Equity is now at the center of The Foundation’s four focus areas: Health & Humanitarian Relief; Equity & Economic Empowerment; Local Community Engagement; and Planet Protection. “Even in these challenging times, UPS employees around the world are delivering what matters for our communities by donating their time, talent and treasure to generate social impact,” said Nikki Clifton, president, social impact and The UPS Foundation. “A heartfelt thank you goes out to every UPSer. Your commitment to supporting our neighbors and lifting communities is meaningful and inspiring.”

Asthma is the most common chronic pediatric condition in the U.S., affecting an estimated 6 million children under the age of 18. In Washington, D.C., pediatric asthma rates are highest in Wards 7 and 8, an area where the District’s greatest share of older, poorly maintained housing is also concentrated. That’s no coincidence, according to doctors at Children’s National Hospital, who say that substandard housing conditions can act as environmental triggers for asthma.

Now, Fannie Mae is supporting Children’s National Hospital in bringing together housing and medical experts to identify and fix the issues inside D.C. homes that are contributing to elevated asthma rates in kids. This work is improving the health of families while also improving the quality of affordable housing in rapidly changing neighborhoods.

The Prince of Wales met with David Smith, Stantec’s global strategy director, alongside other CEOs and senior leaders, as Stanec was recently awarded His Royal Highness’ Terra Carta Seal. The inaugural 2021 Terra Carta Seal recognizes global companies that are driving innovation and demonstrating their commitment to, and momentum towards, the creation of genuinely sustainable markets. 

“We are very proud to receive the Terra Carta Seal in recognition for our climate change and sustainability commitments,” said Gord Johnston, Stantec president and chief executive officer. “Our leading track record on sustainability is the result of the deep commitment and exemplary leadership of our people across Stantec’s entire global operation. Our teams continue to enhance sustainability in our own operations while also helping clients set and achieve their climate action goals.”

Loomis, Sayles & Company announced The Fuss Family Mental Health Initiative, a philanthropic and community service initiative aimed at tackling the mental health crisis facing young people in under-resourced communities. The initiative will provide $500,000 in total funding over the next three years to various programs in Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan, Massachusetts, with the goal of supporting the mental health of young people in impactful ways through systems of support, therapeutic and clinical programming, staff and outreach.

Hypertherm, manufacturer of industrial cutting systems and software, announced the release of its 2020 Corporate Social Responsibility Report earlier this month. The report covers work in the areas of community engagement, environmental impact, and associate well-being. The 2020 report also highlights Hypertherm’s response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, initiatives to address social and civil justice, and the completion of 10-year environmental sustainability goals.

The Natural Gas Company of Trinidad & Tobago Limited (NGC) offered  a summary of some of NGC’s highlight achievements and areas of progress over the year 2020, as profiles in its 2020 Sustainability Report.

Robert Half employees around the world united to support their communities in a seven-week volunteering and fundraising event titled Robert Half Cares. Employees contributed 5,500 volunteer hours and raised more than $535,000 to benefit nonprofit organizations and causes most important to them.

Sixteen out of the 75 Fortune Best Large Workplaces for Women 2021 recipients are Center members. Carmine Di Sibio, EY’s global chairman and CEO, and Steve Varley, EY’s global vice chair sustainability, together offered a live, online Q&A session to share their foremost takeaways after a week attending COP26 in Glasgow. Di Sibio shared, “the problem is too big for any one company to solve alone. While we all have to do what we can in our own business, we need to accelerate systemic impact by working together."
