Spotlight on You

Sharon Murphy, chief information officer at Wells Fargo, shared her insights on why supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and future leaders is crucial. "To make a more equitable recovery, we all have to acknowledge that HBCUs and students need more support and resources in the wake of financial challenges heightened by the pandemic. Wells Fargo made it a priority to help improve their financial stability and set them up for greater financial success after college," said Murphy. "Now more than ever, our future leaders of color will have a stronger foundation for future success."

Maureen Young, director of the social purpose office at Coast Capital Savings, announced on LinkedIn that Coast Capital has donated $50,000 in support of the Canadian Red Cross and provincial, local, and Indigenous governments following catastrophic flooding that has devastated many British Columbian communities. “I encourage you to consider how you can also support those in most need,” said Young. “There are some great resources available on where and how you can help, including this one from Daily Hive.”

Altria Group, Inc. announced its first standalone Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) report, making it the first U.S tobacco company to join more than 2,700 supporters of the TCFD. Altria has made a strong commitment to reducing its environmental impact, both in its companies' direct operations and in the value chain (from supplier to retailer).

Aramark announced its commitment to set enterprise-wide science-based targets, to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in line with the Science Based Targets initiative. This commitment follows the company’s announcement earlier this year, of its goal to reduce GHG emissions by 15%, from its 2019 baseline, by the end of 2025 (in the U.S.), and will align the company with the Science Based Target initiative’s new Net-Zero Standard. Aramark’s climate goal is a core pillar of the company’s Be Well. Do Well. sustainability plan, focused on positively impacting people and the planet.

TELUS, the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation, and a team of partners donated $350,000 to distribute 10 Lü systems featuring immersive audiovisual technology to schools in the Lower North Shore via the Fondation Docteur Camille-Marcoux. The 600 students in these isolated communities and Innu territories can now learn, explore, and be active, thanks to a virtual environment that connects them with one another and to activities that develop their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual skills. This donation follows the recent deployment of the TELUS 5G and 4G network in the Lower North Shore earlier this year, which connected 2,000 households to high speed Internet and mobile phone services for the first time.

In its latest round of community grant funding, the Umpqua Bank Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) of Umpqua Bank, a subsidiary of Umpqua Holdings Corporation, awarded 77 community grants to local nonprofits across its five-state footprint totaling $305,500. In total, the three rounds of community grants contributed $1M to community organizations across Ore., Wash., Idaho, Calif. and Nev. and are part of Umpqua Bank’s overall foundation and corporate giving program that has invested $12.8 million since the Foundation was formed in 2014. “We’re honored to invest in the important work of local nonprofits who have continued to provide critical community services and programs during challenging times,” shared Randy Choy, Managing Director of the Umpqua Bank Charitable Foundation. “Our gratitude goes out to these nonprofits who are essential partners with us to improve access to economic opportunity for all community members.”
