Built on the foundation of these two programs, the journey to develop Torchbearers’ “community of caring” added new and expanded dimensions of flexibility offering year-round participation options. General Session Four: MONDAY | APRIL 25 | 3:00 - 4:00 PM

The power of strategic partnerships

For nearly 25 years, Altria’s tobacco companies have actively addressed one of the most critical issues facing its industry—underage use of tobacco products. Today, underage smoking rates are at generational lows. However, following a rapid rise in youth e-vapor rates in 2018 and 2019, there are early signs that this trend may be reversing. These trends are encouraging, and Altria is working actively with a coalition of partners to address these and other youth issues through strong stakeholder relationships.

The COVID-19 pandemic, for instance, has brought to the forefront unprecedented new challenges facing both youth and youth-serving organizations—challenges they will continue to navigate and experience for years to come. Join Jennifer Hunter, Altria’s senior vice president of corporate citizenship, and Jennifer Sirangelo, president and CEO of the National 4-H Council. The National 4-H Council is the first national youth-serving organization to partner with Altria—beginning the relationship in 1998. Together they will discuss how the power of this strategic partnership, rooted in purpose and bold action, delivers on their shared goals of reduced underage tobacco use, positive outcomes for youth, and supports the ever-changing needs of youth and families.

SPEAKERS

Jennifer Hunter, Senior Vice President, Corporate Citizenship, Altria Client Services LLC

Jennifer Sirangelo, President & CEO, National 4-H Council

Immanuel Sutherland, Senior Manager, Community Impact, Altria

General Session Five: MONDAY | APRIL 25 | 5:30 - 6:30 PM

Fulfilling society’s promise: How corporate America can support families in powering children’s potential

PNC Bank completed the integration of BBVA USA into its operations in 2021, making it the fifth largest bank in the country. With its $88 billion community benefits plan, PNC aims to move the communities it serves forward financially with significant investments in affordable housing, entrepreneurship, and Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). PNC is also increasing and expanding its philanthropy, including the PNC Grow Up Great® program—a $500 million, multi-year, bilingual school readiness initiative reaching low- and moderate-income children from birth to age five. Attendees will learn more about this initiative and hear from one of the program’s long-term grant partners, Dr. Dana Suskind. In this presentation, Dr. Suskind will discuss the importance of building a “parent nation”—that is, a society that shares the responsibility of raising children. Dr. Suskind will make the case that society has abdicated its responsibility to families, adopting policies and norms that directly conflict with the science of early childhood development. By identifying how our current economic and social structures make it difficult for parents to fulfill their role as their child's first and most important teacher, Dr. Suskind outlines the private sector's critical role in mitigating this injustice and building a society that enables parents and caregivers to meet the needs of young children.

SPEAKERS

J. Reymundo Ocañas, Executive Vice President, Director of Community Development Banking, PNC Bank

Sally McCrady, Executive Vice President and Director of Community Affairs, PNC Bank; Chair and President, PNC Foundation

Dana Suskind, MD, Professor of Surgery, Pediatrics, and Public Policy (affiliated), University of Chicago; Co-Director, TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health
