FAQs: Employee Giving & Volunteering
Employee giving and volunteering programs strengthen company culture, boost employee engagement, and enhance brand reputation. Studies show that companies with strong social impact programs attract and retain top talent, improve morale, and even see increased productivity and innovation.
Employees who engage in volunteer programs report higher job satisfaction, stronger loyalty to their employer, and greater overall well-being. Participation in giving and volunteering is often linked to lower turnover rates and increased pride in one’s organization.
Common models include matching gift programs (where the company matches employees' charitable donations), automatic payroll deductions for nonprofits, annual giving campaigns, and giving days where employees rally around a cause together.
Employee volunteering can include skills-based volunteering, pro bono projects, traditional hands-on service days, virtual volunteering opportunities, and longer-term nonprofit board service supported by the company.
Programs should offer a mix of in-person and virtual options, respect different schedules, and support causes across a wide range of interests. Accessibility considerations, such as ensuring activities are welcoming to individuals with disabilities and providing translation resources where needed, are also crucial.
Companies like Salesforce and Deloitte have set strong examples: Salesforce offers employees seven days of paid volunteer time off per year, and Deloitte runs extensive skills-based volunteer programs that use employees' professional expertise to support nonprofits.
